About the festival

Hiroshima Flower Festival is a spring festival held each year on May 3, 4 and 5 in the downtown area of Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture. The festival, which began in 1977 and will be held for the 48th time this year, is known as the biggest event in all of Hiroshima. The venue for the festival is Peace Boulevard and Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward of Hiroshima City.

概要

ひろしまフラワーフェスティバルは、毎年５月3日、4日、5日に広島県広島市の中心部で開催される春のお祭りです。ひろしまフラワーフェスティバルは1977年に始まり、今年で48回目を迎えます。広島で最大級のイベントとして有名です。会場は広島市中区の平和大通り、平和記念公園です。

What’s Hiroshima Flower Festival
A peace flower festival that connects Hiroshima with the world

The Hiroshima Flower Festival started in 1977 and this year will be the 48th festival since it started. The festival is known as the biggest event in Hiroshima.

These 3 ideas have been the main themes of the Flower Festival, for 48 years since it began in 1977. The festival for the anniversary of the Atomic Bomb dropping on the 6th of August recognises 'stillness' as it's theme. To co-ordinate with this, the Flower Festival, celebrated in the warmth of May when the town is bathed in green, calls itself the 'energetic movement' festival.
The festival consists of 3 main parts; parades (a flower parade on the 3rd and a traditional Japanese dance (Yosakoi) parade on the 5th), stages (there are about 30 stages placed around Peace Boulevard, each with their own individual performance schedule) and street venders (situated in about 80 different places along and around Peace Boulevard from the 3rd to the 5th). 1.6 million people come to celebrate the festival annually. In recent years, the festival has taken place not only during the day, but continued into the night with Peace Memorial Park decorated with paper crane monuments and peace candles. This year, there will also be various concerts and traditional Japanese dance (Kagura) performances to enjoy.

ひろしまフラワーフェスティバル（FF）が発足した1977年から48回を経た今日まで受け継がれている祭りの三つのスローガンです。平和記念式典がある8月6日を中心とする祈りの「静」の式典に対し、新緑が映える5月3日～5日に開かれるFFは生命感あふれる「動」の祭典と位置付けられます。祭りは、パレード、ステージ、ひろばを中心に構成。近年は夜の展開も広がり、平和を願うメッセージを添えたキャンドル、市民が育てた花が平和記念公園を彩り、神楽などの催しも開かれています。

How to get to the festival

The festival is located about 20 minutes from JR Hiroshima Station.

If traveling by streetcar:

  • 10 minutes on foot from the Genbaku Dome-mae streetcar stop
  • 5 minutes on foot from the Fukuro-machi streetcar stop
  • 5 minutes on foot from the Chuden-mae streetcar stop

If traveling by bus:
  • 10 minutes on foot from the Hiroshima Bus Center bus terminal

If traveling by boat:
  • Approximately 30 minutes by bus or streetcar from Hiroshima Port (Ujina Port)

Information Centre & Interpreter Student Staff「 Feel free to ask! 」

In Hiroshima Flower Festival venue, there are 5 areas, “Peace Memorial Park”, “Ohte-machi”, “Shirakami”, “Mikawa-cho” and “Tanaka-machi”. In each of these areas, there is an information centre with staff who can speak English. They will provide information about the event and assist you with lost and founds.

Additionally, at a booth near the “The Flower Tower” in Peace Memorial Park, there will be high school students from Hiroshima Global Academy presenting the highlights of the event in English. They will introduce what the festival is about, and share information on the stage performances, parades, local dishes and much more. There are also appealing points that only they know as high school students living in Hiroshima. Feel free to visit us!

５カ所の案内所とFF学生通訳ボランティア

ひろしまフラワーフェスティバル（FF）の会場内には、「平和公園」、「大手町」、「白神」、「三川町」、「田中町」の５ブロックにそれぞれ案内所があり、英語が話せるスタッフが常駐しています。会場内のイベントの案内をはじめ、迷子や落し物の対応にもあたります。

さらに、平和記念公園内の「花の塔」近くに設置したブースでは、広島叡智学園の高校生たちが英語でフラワーフェスティバルの見所や魅力を伝えます。フラワーフェスティバルがどんなお祭りかを説明し、ステージやパレード、グルメなどの情報を教えます。高校生たちが考える広島の魅力も紹介します。気軽にお立ち寄りください。

  1. Flower displays
Each location inside the venue is decorated with flower arrangements that make for great photo opportunities.



  1. 花の展示
会場内各所に花のオブジェが飾られています。フォトスポットとして楽しんでください。



  • The Flower Tower (South side of Peace Memorial Park)
This 8-meter-tall tower, decorated with 8,000 pots of flowers, is the symbol of the festival.



  • 花の塔（平和記念公園南側）
8000鉢の花で装飾される高さ8mのタワー、お祭りのシンボル。



  • Peace Flower Project Hana-iku (inside Peace Memorial Park)
Approx. 20,000 pots of flowers are used to create works of flower art.



  • ピースフラワープロジェクト花育（平和記念公園内）
約2万鉢の花で公園内にイラストを描きます。



  1. The Flower Parade
On May 3, a parade is held down the 1.2 kilometer stretch of Peace Boulevard (from Tanaka-machi in Naka Ward up until Peace Memorial Park). About 6,000 people from 80 organizations participate in the parade each year, including dancers, marching bands, hana-gurumacars decorated with flowers, and more.

５月３日には、平和大通り（広島市中区田中町から平和記念公園前）1.2㎞のパレードを行います。ダンスやマーチングバンド、花が飾られた車「花車」など約80団体、6000人が参加します。



  1. Stage performances
About 30 stages line Peace Boulevard during the three-day festival from May 3-5 where visitors can watch performances like music, dance, and Japanese performing arts.

平和大通りの各所で約30のステージが建てられます。5月3～5日の3日間、音楽、ダンス、日本芸能などのパフォーマンスが行われます。



  1. Booths and food stalls
During the three-day festival from May 3-5, visitors can enjoy a variety of booths inside the venue, including food stalls, hands-on booths, games, event spaces, and more.



  1. ひろば・グルメ
5月3日～5日の3日間、会場内各所には、飲食、体験、遊び、交流ひろばなどの多様なブースが並びます。



  1. Kinsai Yosakoi dance performances
Yosakoi is a popular traditional Japanese dance from Kōchi Prefecture.Each year, about 30 yosakoidance troupes perform on stage and in the parade on May 5.

日本の伝統的な踊り「よさこい」の団体がひろしまフラワーフェスティバルでも演舞します。5月5日のステージとパレードに約30団体が出演します。

  • Street track and field events
On May 4, Peace Boulevard becomes a running track where visitors can watch top Japanese athletes compete in track and field sports, including the 100-meter dash, pole vaulting, hurdles, and more.

5月4日、歩行者天国の平和大通りに陸上競技のトラックが出現。多くの来場者の目の前で、日本のトップアスリートが100ｍ走、棒高跳び、ハードルなどの競技を行います。



  • Kagura festival
Kagura is a traditional performing art popular in Hiroshima. On May 4, kagura troupes from Hiroshima prefecture perform kagura plays at Phoenix Hall in the International Conference Center Hiroshima.



  • 神楽まつり
5月4日の広島国際会議場フェニックスホールにて、広島県内の神楽団が出演します。



  • Peace lights
On the evenings of May 3 and 4, flower displays inside Peace Memorial Park are illuminated. The park is also decorated with candles imbued with prayers for peace.



  • 夜のライトアップ
5月3日、4日の夜、平和記念公園内では花のオブジェがライトアップされます。平和の祈りを込められたキャンドルも飾られます。



  • Flower Ambassadors
Three Flower Ambassadors welcome visitors at various locations inside the venue as symbols of the festival.



  • フラワーアンバサダー
お祭りのシンボルとして、3人の花の大使が会場内各所で来場者を出迎えます。
